STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Although the term STEM has only gained popularity in the last several years, the activities of STEM have been a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s program since its beginning.  Whether it’s the medical science involved in the First Aid merit badge, one of the first merit badges required for the Eagle rank, or the engineering involved in trying to build the fastest pinewood derby car, STEM is everywhere in Scouting.

Can Scouts earn STEM awards?

Yes!  Scouts can earn Nova and Supernova awards.  You can view this overview of the Nova and Supernova awards, or you can obtain detailed guides from the Scout Shop.

Where can I find out more about STEM and Scouting?

The BSA National STEM in Scouting site is a good place to start.
